Hello Jo,

Great question - thanks!
Here are 13 differences to check out.
Hope this helps.
Ian Harris

1 Mind Mapping the Emphasis is on making associations whereas with Model Mapping the emphasis is on organising
2 With Mind Mapping BOI (basic ordering ideas) is peripheral - in that it is requested and referred to - whereas with Model Mapping Categorisation is central to the process
3 With Mind Mapping BOI isn’t explained or taught; with Model Mapping Categorisation (the skill needed to find BOIs) is explained and taught
4 Mind Mapping doesn’t explain the assumed thinking skills in creating BOI; Model Mapping Explains and teaches the implicit steps within the skill of categorisation
5 With Mind Mapping BOI isn’t related to language structures; In model mapping categorisation is extensively related to language structures (hierarchies)
6 Mind maps aren’t related to understanding or mental models (which is the focus of all we as teachers do in the classroom); Whereas Model maps are constantly referred to as visual expressions of mental models
7 Neuroscience is used for theoretical explanation (most of which is out-of-date and rejected by neuroscientists); In Model Mapping Cognitive psychology is used for theoretical explanation
8 Buzan claims his very individual style is the only graphic way to construct mind maps; We say there is no one correct way to graphically draw model maps
9 Buzan claims examples of other, condemned, styles represent different types of thinking (confusing readers); We say that superficial graphic differences are not representative of different types of thinking at all (clarifying readers)
10 Buzan emphasises colour and pictures as core elements for memory. Whereas we emphasise organised structure as core to memory, and acknowledges colour & pictures as secondary aids
11 Buzan doesn’t fit mind maps into a bigger framework of other visual tools; In our work model maps are part of a coherent framework of visual tools
12 Buzan doesn’t include other visual tools (apart from pictures) in mind maps ; we include and encourage the use of a wide range of tools in Model Maps.
13. Mind Maps can only be drrawn deductively (assumes the mapper knows what their BOIs are). Model Mappers are taught to draw them deductively AND inductively
