Visual tools in science
Hi, myself and a colleague have been using visual tools in science following Model Learning training, and have been impressed with the impact they have had on the learning of our students. It would be great to hear ideas from other colleagues who or questions!

Rachel,
Ian and I have been engaged with Luton on designing a set of science posters based on a range of visual tools. We have used:
• a flowbubble to capture the core scientific method
• double bubbles to compare characteristics of different metals (and the inherited/infected distinctions of diseases)
ª single bubbles to capture classroom dialogue with particular attention on establishing core understanding of vocabulary
• clustering to expand initial gathering of information (and prior learning) from single bubbles
• affinity diagrams to organise the accumulated ideas, facts and opinions into themes

We will be selling these sets of posters soon, so look out for news on the website.
Can I also suggest you visit the iDEAS section of the website for free Powerpoint documents that illustrate just how practical visual tools are when applied across a wide range of contexts. So far we have covered:
• behaviour conversations (that can be easily adapted for target settting, within a science context)
• ready to revise
• total recall (for exams)
These iDEAS will come out at least every half term.

You can also get yourself a copy of WiseGuide to Model Mapping and WiseGuide to Visual Tools which we have just had published. Both are, by far, our most visual, simple and practical works yet on the use of visual tools in classrooms.

Let us know about your own ideas,
Oliver
